A BIT OF BACKGROUND...
Bordeaux gets a lot of bad press these days. Everyone from the regular press (New York Times, etc.) to the wine trade seems to be down on the region. Commentators complain Bordeaux is either boring, cheap and generic or overpriced and over oaked, more a status symbol than an enjoyable drink.
For the region itself this is a full on crisis. Land prices have fallen (23.8% in 2025) and the French Government has stepped in to pay for a €130m vine pull scheme. Today there are less than 95,000 ha, down from a peak of around 145,000 ha. Producers are being forced to sell off wine in bulk while demand in France for generic AOC Bordeaux red collapses.
It's not all bad news. Like some sort of boxed cat, Bordeaux is simultaneously in crisis and very much alive. At the top end, prices have largely stabilized. Elsewhere, a growing cohort of producers is making wines that are lighter, terroir-focused and more adventurous in variety. Delicious minimal intervention wines that would be at home in any fancy Sydney wine bar.
