WHATS GOING ON HERE...

The Canary Islands are a grouping of Spanish islands sitting off the west coast of Africa. The islands are most famous as a holiday destination, with masses of British and German tourists flopping onto the islands' resorts each year.

Wine production here is small but has a history going back hundreds of years, since at least Spanish colonisation in the 15th century. The wines were popular in England for a time, peaking in the 1500s and 1600s, and were referred to as 'Canary Sack', which is quite the image.

Phylloxera never reached here, meaning some very old vines and a diverse mix of grape varieties. Today, vineyards are found across all the seven main islands, mostly on Tenerife and Lanzarote. The islands are surprisingly diverse, with everything from dry and arid to wet and subtropical. Tenerife has vineyards well up to 1,500 m and in places the vine canes are woven together to create braids up to 10+ metres long. Meanwhile, on Lanzarote the vines are planted in hollows dug into the ash that covers part of the island and protected by stone walls. Wild stuff.

The wines themselves are best described as 'volcanic'. The best can be saline and fresh with plenty of depth, occasionally smoky, peppery and always vibrant. Sometimes even a little weird. So join us as we taste through a selection of wines from the Canary Islands!
