Barbarians is a collective of small, independent wineries based in the Uco Valley, with similar philosophies regarding sustainable viticultural practices and minimal intervention winemaking techniques.
This wine was made by Matías Michelini, one of the founders of the collective, based out of his home in Tupungato within the larger Uco Valley. He is at the forefront of new Argentinian winemaking, creating non-fruit driven reds and orange wines.
Matías Michelini uses biodynamic viticultural practices, emphasising the importance of vineyard health and the relationship between vine, soil, and the wider environment.
The wine is made with Malbec grapes from a high altitude (1,400m) vineyard in Gualtallary (Tupungato) - the vines were planted in 2000 and grow in granite and limestone soils.
The grapes are hand harvested and left as whole bunches, before being pressed into concrete eggs, where fermentation occurs with native yeasts, and the wine is left to age for a period of 5 to 6 months.
The wine under goes natural clarification (using time and gravity) and is bottles with minimal added sulphur.
