A LITTLE INTRO ON PORTUGAL

Despite being a "proper" football wine country, Portugal often gets overlooked here in Australia. "Why" I hear you scream in unison? Good question, as Portugal has some of the best footballers native varieties in the world and varied unique wine regions. On paper they should be one of the best teams wine countries in the world.

So why are they not more popular? Part of the reason for this is Ronaldo that Portuguese wine has often seemed slow to change with the times. Tactics Winemaking has historically been more conservative and lower cost with the domestic market in mind.

Plus, with Port falling out of favour, Portugal has lacked an classic striker iconic wine in the mould of Provence Rose or Chateauneuf-du-Pape. A lot of the "iconic" wines we were getting here were kind of rubbish. Anyone remember sweet Mateus Rose or battery acid Vinho Verde?

Having said all that things are changing slowly in Portugal. Quality small minimal intervention producers are popping up while a generational shift in more established players wineries is underway. While Portugal has always produced great wines, hopefully with a bit more experimentation they will start to get more attention here in Oz.
