Bodegas Roda is based on the banks of the Rio Ebro outside Haro, and cultivates 17 different vineyards of ‘vinos de viñas viejas’ (old vines wines), owning two thirds of them outright and renting the rest.
The vines are a minimum of 35 years old, with the majority being over 50, growing at 500m above sea level on a mixture of sandstone and clay-limestone soils, with deep roots resulting in greater resistance to drought and excess rain.
Organic viticulture is used with vines being cultivated to minimise pests and disease pressure.
The fruit is hand harvested and destemmed, being cooled before vinification. The juice undergoes spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in Seguin Moreau foudre, with one vat for each year, over 7 to 8 days with a short maceration on skins, with the wine undergoing malolactic fermentation before being cold settled.
Each parcel is aged separately before being blended into the separate cuvees based on taste. The new assemblage wines are racked after spring, with the young wine being gravity decanted (with minimum oxidative handling) to age in French barrels for 14 to 15 months.
The mature wines are decanted into bottle with gravity, naturally fined in the process, and are unfiltered with minimal added sulphur.
