Victorian Schioppettino that's deliciously fresh, darkly seriously, yet completely approachable.
Intensely perfumed. Violets and alpine florals, ripe blackberry and blackcurrant, dark berry fruit, white pepper, savoury oak spice, and a fine herbal edge.
Lively on the palate, dry, light to medium bodied, vibrant in texture and full of depth, with striking acidity and chewy tannin.
Fresh, complex, and seriously delicious - its no wonder that its been used by people for centuries to make promises to each other. . .
Producer: Blood Moon Wines
Region: Heathcote, Victoria
Grapes: Schioppettino - a traditional variety from the Italian-Slovenian border, recently being brough back from near extinction.
NERD NOTES
The Chalmers Heathcote Vineyard is an east facing sloped site comprised of the famous red Cambrian soils of the area. The lower vineyard is deep red clay-loam while the higher vineyard is complex rocky terrain of ironstone, dolerite, green basalt and jasper.
Chalmers aim to follow organic farming principles where possible and are transparent in their communication when it is not.
Harvested 28 February. 25% of the fruit was placed in the bottom of the fermenters, the rest gently destemmed over the top. Wild yeasts were allowed to complete the fermentation, with the cap being rolled under the juice by hand once a day for 17 days, before being pressed to older neutral French oak barrels.
No additions apart from sulphur, no fining or filtration. Vegan friendly.
