Tasting Notes

A classically style Rioja Gran Reserva from the village of Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón

Richly aromatic, with black fruits and spiced scents. Dark cherry fruit, stewed berries and plums, potpourri, sweetly spiced, opening up to notes of leather, dried earth, and tobacco.

Smooth and lushly textured, full bodied and dry, a finely integrated tannic structure that results in a soft mouthfeel with just enough chew to it. Persistent on the finish with hints of kirsch.

It's ready to drink now and it was definitely worth the wait.

Producer: Bodegas Urbina
Region: Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón (Rioja Alta) - Rioja, Spain
Grapes: Tempranillo

Nerd Notes

The Urbina family has been working the same property for 5 generations since 1870, now with 75 hectares under vine across 34 plots around the village of Cuzcurrita del Río Tirón, in the Ojo-Tiron Valley within the Rioja Alta subregion.

The vines grow in the cold limestone sand soils that surround the village, and are cultivated with traditional framing practices and sustainable viticulture, limiting the use of pesticides and fungicides.

Vinification occurs with spontaneous fermentation using native yeast, before being aged in a mix of French and American oak barrels (aged between new to 7 years old) with periodic racking.
The Gran Reserve is aged for over 3 years in barrel, before being further matured for a couple of years in stainless steel before bottling.

The wine is naturally stabilised (with time and gravitiy), and bottled unfined, unfiltered, and minimal added sulphur.
