A rich and darkly fruited Cabernet from the Bio Bio Valley - made unoaked with ancestral methods in both the vineyard and cellar.
Producer: Viña Cacique Maravilla - Manuel Moraga
Region: Yumbel in Bio Bio Valley, Chile
Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon
Rich on the palate, energetic and almost prickly in texture, medium to full bodied, with captivating tannin and a dash of fresh acidity.
Darkly fruited in character, juicy black cherry, plump blackberry and raspberry, ripe plum, fresh alpine herbs and wild shrubbery, small crushed berries, seductive fruit spice, and a smoked agave note that builds from the first sip to ending on the finish.
Super tasty and interesting, one of the most intriguing Cabernets we've tried in a while.
NERD NOTES
A family estate dating back to 1776, the vineyard is 50km from the Pacific Oceanin the small vineyard of Yumbel.
Manuel follows the family's ancestral winemaking traditions in both the vineyard and in the cellar.
The vineyard is extremely fertile, with the original (now old) vines planted over a lava river and volcanic soils. Manuel cultivates the vineyard year round - everything is done organically, without the use of chemicals or fertiliser, with ploughing done by horse, and digging to control weeds when possible.
The wines are produced with as minimal intervention as possible.
Grapes are harvested and destemmed by hand, before undergoing spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts in open-top Rauli (Chilean pink oak) vats, aged for 10 months, before being bottled unfined, unfiltered, and no added sulphur.
