Restrained aroma, with notes of pomegranate and fresh red fruit. It is bright on the palate, full of ripe red berries, crunchy red currant, a touch of Italian herbs, and a creamy nougat character holding everything in place.

This is the project of Sonia Gambino. While working with Barraco wines in Marsala, Sonia was caught in the 2020 covid lockdowns. With no where to go she went to stay with her grandfather in her families old village of Maletto near Mt Etna.

With time to one her hands Sonia started a garden and struck up a friendship with Don Vincenzo, an elderly neighbor who admired her vegetables. He had a “secret garden” full of fruit, flowers, and vines. Don Vincenzo agreed to let her make wine from his grapes, on the condition that she produce enough for his daily bottle.

Word spread, and soon others in the village asked her to revive their vines. Today Sonia is producing wine from a dozen high-altitude vineyards.

Despite being in the shadow of Mt Etna, Maletto sits just outside the appellation. An isolated region more famous for its strawberries and with no state road access. Nerello struggles here with grapes like Grenache, Minella, Alicante and Grecanico more common.
