What: Wines from the Rhone Valley, France
Where: Goblin Wine Shop, 234 Marrickville Rd, Marrickville NSW 2204
Time: 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Join us as we taste through a selection of wines from both the NORTH and SOUTH of the Rhone Valley, France (gasp!).
The Rhone Valley refers to the land on either side of the Rhone River. Shocking but true.
The region is primarily split into two sub regions, the Northern and Southern Rhone, with the town of Montélimar between them. The North and South are, in a very practical sense, quite different.
THE NORTH is mostly a narrow series of granite hills hugging the river with a focus on single variety Syrah (Shiraz) alongside Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. The wines are premium with a limited area meaning a limited production.
THE SOUTH meanwhile is a broad open series of hills stretching out at many times the size of the North, making up roughly 90-95% of wine production in the Rhone. The focus here is primarily blends based on Grenache. While premium wine exists in the South (Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas...), the region also produces large amounts of more value focused wine.
The more observant amongst you may have noticed that many of these varieties are equally important here in Australia. However in terms of taste they are, generally, quite different. A Southern Rhone Grenache blend is quite different from a perfect, beautiful McLaren Vale Grenache while Northern Rhone Syrah is generally different from Barossa Shiraz (yes Victoria your Shiraz is very nice, stop pouting).
How different? How good? Super good!? French Style Shiraz!?! The origin of the chilled red?!?!?! All this and more!!!
So join us as we taste through a selection of wines from the Rhone Valley!
