Tasting Notes

Single vineyard late harvest Mazuelo from a small village winery in La Rioja.

Earthen, very good focus and organisation, touches of nutty tannin and seeds bitter. Delicate fruit sweetness (dusty, earthy cranberry, rosehip) and lacy tannin but nicely ripe; round and soft without the vegetal linearity of Caranyena. Flourishes of thyme, stone, minerals and plum.

Producer: Miguel Merino - Miguel (junior) and Érika Merino
Region: Briones (Rioja Alta) - La Rioja, Spain
Grapes: Mazuelo (Carignan)

Nerd Notes

Miguel Merino is a small family winery based out of the village of Briones on the southern bank of Rio Ebro, 8km southeast of Haro. The winery was started by Miguel senior in 2000, but has since been taken up by husband Miguel junior and wife Érika Merino in 2019 - starting with a single vineyard of Mazuelo (Carignan), and now running the entire winery.

The grapes for 'Parcela la Quinta Cruz' comes from a 1.2 hectare vineyard of Mazuelo, planted on the steep slopes of Monte Calvario in 1986. The vines grow in thin gravelly-sandy topsoil with covered with rolling pebbles, limiting the vigor of the vine.

Very late harvest, right on the edge of the season, open fermented in 500L oak barrels before being aged for 12 months in a mix of 1300L concrete vat and 2-3 year old 500L French oak Bocoi.
