ABOUT OXI DAY
"On 28 October 1940, Greece made history. When Mussolini’s envoy demanded that Greece allow Axis troops to occupy the country, Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas responded with one simple word: “Oxi” (No). Pronounced (OHI).
That refusal became a turning point in World War II, as Greece resisted occupation and inspired nations across Europe with its courage. Today, OXI Day is commemorated not just as a moment of defiance, but as a symbol of resilience, unity and a particular and special connection to the ANZACs.
In April 1941, following Greece’s stand against Italy, German forces launched their invasion through Bulgaria into Northern Greece. British Commonwealth troops, including Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs), were deployed to support the Greek army.
Major engagements occurred in Macedonia and central Greece, including the defense of Thessaloniki, Servia Pass, and Vevi (near Florina). Although ultimately forced to withdraw, the ANZACs’ involvement is remembered as an act of solidarity with Greece, and many soldiers became prisoners of war or participated in resistance efforts.
The campaign forged long-standing bonds between Australia, New Zealand, and Greece, especially in Northern regions where these battles took place
ABOUT RARE BIRDS
Our Rare Birds tastings are a chance to try some of the more rare and premium wines that come our way.
These events are a bit more personal and conversational than our regular events, with a chance to taste and discuss premium wines in a less formal setting.
