Sierra de Toloño refers to a small slice of the Sierra Cantabria, the dramatic range that forms the northern border of Rioja. The woman behind the project, Sandra Bravo, is a Rioja-native who gained winemaking experience through a globetrotting string of vintages including in Nelson, California, Chianti, Bordeaux, Priorat and Montsant. She brings to Rioja a deep commitment to the expression of terroir and a desire to make honest, delicious wine from organically farmed grapes. It is in this sense that Sierra de Tolono may be one of the most simple estates in Rioja, no plans for Gran Reservas, no desire for Frank Gehry designed winery hotels or ultra-expensive Parker pointers. Yet the wines themselves are as nuanced as the land they come from, full of the blue and black fruit of the Atlantic edges of Rioja with a freshness and a crunch of chalk that seems to be a hallmark of these northern limestone soils.
