A Rioja Tinto from a stunning single site mountain vineyard that overlooks the Sierra de los Agudos mountains.
Carlos produces some of the best Grenache in Rioja and Spain in general. This wine comes from a tiny 1.07ha plot called Yasa de Las Cuevas (in the Sierra de Los Agudos – opposite Mount Yerga). Super well regarded and one of the best wines from Rioja Oriental.
Rich and dense yet at the same time vibrant. The wine carries the richness of the fruit beautifully, managing to feel almost elegant in the glass. Dark and red fruits mingle with mountain herbs and citrus fruits. Really great wine.
Producer: Vinos en Voz Baja - Carlos Mazo
Region: Aldeanueva de Ebro, La Rioja Oriental - Rioja, Spain
Grapes: Garnacha (Grenache), Tinta Velasco, Pasera
NERD NOTES
High density and unirrigated vines, with red sandy clay soils on limestone in La Rioja Oriental. The vines are low goblet pruned, used to conserve energy and water in the arid environment.
A blend of Grenache (50%), Tinta Velasco (30%, planted in 1954), and Pasera (20%, planted in 1950).
Vinification begins with the grapes harvested as whole bunches and then crushed by foot in small batches. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with wild yeast, without temperature control. Aged for 12 months in foudre and passes in concrete.
Bottled with minimal added sulphur.
